Portuguese Club Teams in Europe - Most Significant Achievements


Sport Lisboa e Benfica

Benfica have won the European Champions' Cup (the equivalent of the modern day Champions League) on 2 occasions. In 1961, Benfica beat FC Barcelona 3-2 in the Final. Benfica beat Real Madrid 5-3 in the 1962 Final.

Benfica have also lost the Champions League Final (or older equivalent) on 5 occasions. In 1963, Benfica lost to AC Milan 2-1 in the Final. Inter Milan defeated Benfica by 1-0 in the 1965 Final.

Subsequently, Manchester United beat Benfica 4-1 in the 1968 Final. In 1988, PSV Eindhoven defeated Benfica on penalties after a 0-0 draw. Benfica lost the 1990 Final 1-0 to AC Milan.

Benfica lost the 1983 UEFA Cup Final 2-1 on aggregate to Belgian side Anderlecht. Benfica were beaten in the Europa League Final 2-1 by Chelsea in 2013. In 2014 Benfica again reached the Europa League Final but were again beaten, this time on penalties by Sevilla after a 0-0 draw.

Sporting Clube Portugal

Sporting have won the Cup Winners' Cup on 1 occasion - in 1964. Sporting's route to the final included a 16-1 victory against APOEL! Sporting defeated MTK Budapest in the Final, which was replayed after the first attempt ended 3-3. Sporting won the replay 1-0. Sporting reached the UEFA Cup Final in 2005, but were defeated by CSKA Moscow 3-1.

Futebol Clube do Porto

Porto have won the Champions League on 2 occasions. They have also won the UEFA Cup twice. In 1987, Porto beat Bayern Munich in the Champions League Final by 2 goals to 1.

Subsequently in 2004, Porto beat AS Monaco in the Champions League Final 3-0.

Porto won the UEFA Cup Final against Celtic, 3-2 after extra time, in 2003. In 2011 FC Porto beat Sporting Braga, another Portuguese club side, 1-0 in the Europa League Final. Porto have also been losing finalists on one occasion in the Cup Winners' Cup, losing 2-1 to Juventus in the 1984 Final.

Béla Guttmann and the Curse

After guiding Benfica to European success in 1961 and 1962, manager Guttmann apparently asked for a modest pay rise. When it was turned down, Guttmann declared "Not in a hundred years from now will Benfica ever be European champions again". Since 1962, Benfica have lost an extraordinary number of European Finals...
